Diamond Alternatives

As one of Denton’s finest jewelry establishments, our team at Nasr Jewelers aims to accomplish 2 major things: 1) educate our clients on the products that we sell, and 2) help fulfill their jewelry needs or repairs. Today, we’ll be focusing on diamond alternatives and showcasing the pros & cons of each option. We understand everyone’s desire to own diamonds; they are a woman’s best friend. However, for many, diamonds come with a price tag that’s beyond reach. In its place, there are three options that will still leave your loved ones feeling cherished. They are cubic zirconia, moissanite, and lab-grown diamonds. Although different, each of these will allow our clients a variety of pieces to choose from with varying price points.

Cubic Zirconia

Let’s start with our most affordable option. Cubic zirconia is a synthetic gemstone made of the cubic crystalline form of zirconium dioxide. The pro of owning one of these pieces is that you’re still able to wear a stylish piece at a fraction of the cost. There are many cubic zirconia pieces in a variety of colors that are eye-catching and easily mistaken for more high-quality collections. The main downside of cubic zirconia is its durability. These gemstones are very fragile and can break easily if dropped.

Moissanite

Next up, we are introducing moissanite. This diamond simulant is made of silicon carbide. Originally discovered in a meteor crater in 1893, naturally occurring moissanite is extremely rare; this is why most of what you will find on the market is lab-created. A huge perk of owning a moissanite piece is how similar it is to a diamond. Although not as strong, it’s still durable and to an untrained eye, almost identical to its counterpart. On the downside, moissanite does not hold its value or have the same shine that a diamond does.

Lab-created diamonds

Lastly, we have lab-created diamonds. These stones have the same chemical makeup as naturally occurring diamonds and are also visually identical. The differences between the two are how they are made and their rarity. Purchasing a naturally occurring diamond is going to cost you a pretty penny. For those looking to get the biggest bang for your buck, we think lab-created diamonds are the way to go. This diamond alternative will cost you the most. However, if you are searching for a piece that is close to the “real thing,” look no further.

At the end of the day, all three of these diamond alternatives offer you beautiful pieces to choose from. Your decision will come down to durability, price, and appearance. Cubic zirconia, as your cheapest option, is not as strong as its counterparts but still offers breathtaking choices. Moissanite is strong and beautiful but will not be something that you could one day call a family heirloom. Lab-created diamonds are more expensive than your other two options but are chemically and visually the same as a naturally occurring diamond. Before coming into our store, we recommend that you lay out your budget and think about how often this piece will be worn. Our team here at Nasr Jewelers is prepared to answer any remaining questions that you may have regarding these three stones. Feel free to stop on by, and we’ll be happy to help!
